
Melencia Johnson, PhD
Dr. Melencia Johnson is an Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology and the co-director of the African American Studies Minor at the University of South Carolina Aiken. Dr. Johnson’s courses include Criminological Theory, Girls’ Delinquency, Introduction to Sociology, Juvenile Delinquency, Sociology of the Black Experience, Sociology of Deviant Behavior, and Race, Class, Gender: Crime and Justice.
Dr. Johnson graduated from Norfolk State University, with a bachelor’s degree in sociology with an emphasis in criminal justice. She then earned her Master’s Degree and Ph.D. in sociology with an emphasis in criminology and gender studies from Southern Illinois University Carbondale.
Her current community work includes sitting on the boards or executive committee of the Center for African American History, Art and Culture, the Aiken County Branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), and the Aiken (SC) Chapter of The Links, Incorporated..
